Opinion: We're proud to call hospital ours

Ten years ago, when rural hospitals were closing by the hundreds around the country, we were just glad that Commonwealth Health Corp., the parent company of The Medical Center at Bowling Green, purchased the Franklin-Simpson Memorial Hospital.

A nearby emergency room and hospital is essential for economic development.

We never imagined that Commonwealth Health Corp. would invest so much in our hospital and essentially make health care more convenient and professional for the people of Simpson County.

In the old F-S Memorial, patients had to share semi-private rooms and a communal shower. However, CHC added a patient wing recently that featured state-of-the-art private rooms with their own showers.

Along the way, The Medical Center at Franklin -- as it is now known -- also has acquired diagnostic equipment to rival some of the bigger regional hospitals. And a new Medical Arts building was recently opened that attracted two primary care physicians and one of the top surgeons in this area -- Dr. William Daniel.

Hospital Administrator Clara Sumner vowed to make The Medical Center at Franklin a hospital that this community can be proud of. And Ms. Sumner and CHC have far exceeded our expectations and even our dreams.

This community is now proud of its hospital, and economic development officials show it off every chance they get. How many communities the size of Franklin have a hospital and its capabilities like The Medical Center at Franklin?

You can probably count them on your fingers.

CHC, with the urging and guidance of Ms. Sumner, has invested about $10 million in our hospital over the last 10 years.

This community could not be any more fortunate to have Ms. Sumner and CHC as its partners. We have and we will accomplish a lot in economic development with such a modern and aggressive hospital.
